A small YouTube channel is going to have to focus on its niches. Why?

When you do not have an already big channel or a personality which is well known, people are going to learn whether they enjoy your content. A YouTuber who builds trust is going to have advantage at starting any channel. 

If you are celebrity or have many cyber friends who collaborate with you in meatspace, then it is possible to get many subscribers quickly on the site. However, such collaborations require networking and connections that one builds over time from when they are in school with colleagues.

So what do you do when you have to build it from scratch?

Get a Niche so can start building your channel here.

My Niche is in History.

When I began my channel in 2021, I was researching what I saw for Byzantine History. There wasn't as much then as there is now. I saw a niche that had an opening and I took it. 

Whatever your interest, when building up a channel or a site, you need to cherish your niches.
